En 1872, Alexandre Vesselovski, connu par la suite comme historien des cultures et théoricien de l’histoire littéraire, consacrait à l’université de Saint-Pétersbourg un exposé oral au philosophe Pierre Bayle, fils de la Réforme et champion du scepticisme à la fin du XVIIe siècle ; ce texte avait sombré dans l’oubli à l’époque soviétique, sort partagé par son auteur si l’on excepte une brève période de retour en grâce à la fin des années 1930. Cette traduction commentée et annotée et pourvue d’une introduction entend remédier à cet état de chose ; elle doit nous permettre de redécouvrir la rencontre improbable entre un grand universitaire russe et celui qui a assuré en Europe la continuité entre la Renaissance et les Lumières, phénomènes restés à la marge de la culture russe. Vesselovski insiste sur les difficultés survenues en Hollande entre Bayle et ses coreligionnaires, comme si toute religion, aussi éclairée soit-elle, portait en elle les germes de l’intolérance et de la superstition. En parfait occidentaliste, il délivre ainsi à ses contemporains un message de tolérance dans un beau texte tout vibrant de conviction et servi par l’éloquence de l’oralité.
In 1872 Alexander Veselovsky, who later became well-knowed in Russia as a historian of cultures and a theorician of literary history, delivered at St. Peterburg university a speech about the French philosopher Pierre Bayle, successor of the Reformation and best representative of scepticism in Europe at the end of the XVII century. This work, as well as his author, remained forgotten all through the Soviet era, with the exception of a brief period at the end of the 30s. Our original translation, annotated and provided with an introduction, aims to facilitate the rediscovery of this quite unexpected meeting between a great Russian scientist and the man who managed to link together in Europe the Renaissance and the period of Enlightment, wereas these phenomenas always remained external in the Russian culture. Veselovsky insists on the difficulties which Bayle met in Holland with his coreligionists as if any religion, whatever its degree of enlightment, bore in itself the germs of intolerance and superstition. As a typical occidentalist, Veselovsky thus delivers to his contemporaries a message of universal tolerance through a beautiful text full of conviction and magnified by the art of orality.
В 1872 году Александр Веселовский, ставший впоследствии известным историком культур и теоретиком истории литературы, сделал в Санкт-Петербургском университете доклад о философе Пьере Бейле, сыне Реформы и великом скептическом уме 17-го века. В советские времена этот текст был предан забвению, та же участь постигла и самого автора, за исключением краткого периода возвращения из небытия в конце тридцатых годов. Предлагаемый перевод этого доклада с комментариями и примечаниями включает и введение, имеющее целью исправить нынешнее состояние дел, дав нам возможность вновь для себя открыть эту необычную встречу крупного профессора Российского университета с человеком, обеспечившим в Европе переход от Возрождения к веку Просвещения, явлениям, оставшимся на границах русской культуры. Веселовский в особенности останавливается на сложных отношениях, возникших в Голландии между Бейлем и его соратниками по вере, как если бы любая религия, какой бы просвещённой она ни была, несла в себе самой зародыши нетерпимости и суеверия. Будучи совершенным западником, Веселовский обращается к своим современникам с призывом к терпимости в этом замечательном докладе, полном глубокой убеждённости и яркого красноречия.
