In 1851 Otto von Boehtlingk published a Grammar of the Yakut Language which was unusual in several respects. It was the first attempt to make a systematic presentation of a Siberian language and represented as such a great achievement, but it was only a parenthesis in the life and career of Boehtlingk, who was foremost a famous Sanskritist. Boehtlingk, who was a Baltic German, wrote it as the third volume of Alexander Theodor von Middendorff’s (a Baltic German as well) report on his Russian scientific expedition in Siberia in the years 1842 to 1845. Middendorff was a zoologist and a specialist of natural sciences: his expedition was primarily devoted to the climatic, zoological, botanical and geographical characteristics of Siberia. As a consequence, Boehtlingk’s volume on the Yakut language was the only one out of four to deal with linguistic and cultural information. Boehtlingks Grammar of the Yakut language opened with a large introduction where he discussed crucial problems of the science of language, like the concept of “inner (linguistic) form”, the criteria and the significance of linguistic classifications, their consequence on the definition and delimitation of culture etc. On the one hand, in dealing with such matters and referring to authors like August Pott and Heymann Steinthal, Boehtlingk introduced the Russian public to the contemporary discussions among German scholars on humboldtian linguistics and he did it at a early date, even before Potebnja. On the other hand, the way in which he established a link between philological-linguistic and ethnographic questions can be understood only within the Russian context of the time, e.g. the significance of Siberia for the Russian Empire. Boehtlingk’s Grammar of the Yakut Language is a perfect illustration of the scientific and political importance of 19th century cultural transfers between Germany and Russia.
