Après avoir étudié et enseigné à l’Université de Saint-Pétersbourg, Vladimir Petcherine (1807-1885) émigre en 1836. Ayant « fui la Russie comme on fuit une ville pestiférée », Petcherine tire le diable par la queue. Il est vite déçu par la France, passe par tous les systèmes philosophiques possibles, jusqu’à ce qu’il entende par hasard à Liège un prédicateur relater la vie du fondateur des Rédemptoristes, Alphonse-Marie de Liguori (1696-1787), qui avait tout quitté pour se consacrer à l’évangélisation des campagnes. Voyant dans le catholicisme la possibilité de réaliser son utopie socialiste de paradis terrestre, Petcherine « franchit le Rubicon », se convertit en 1840, entre dans l’ordre des Rédemptoristes en 1841 et est ordonné prêtre en 1841. Déchu de sa nationalité en 1847 pour avoir embrassé le catholicisme, il devient un prédicateur renommé, en Angleterre (1845-1854) où Alexandre Herzen vient le voir, puis en Irlande. Mais en 1861, après un séjour à Rome où les intrigues et l’esprit d’ambition le heurtèrent, il démissionna de son ordre, qu’il trouvait trop peu retranché du monde, et servira jusqu’à sa mort comme chapelain dans un hôpital de Dublin, ne croyant apparemment plus en rien, mais fidèle à son devoir.
Having studied and taught at the University of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Pecherine (1807-1885) emigrated in 1836. After having “fled Russia as one flees a doomed city”, he lived from hand to mouth. Quickly disenchanted with France, he went through every possible philosophical system until, by chance, he heard at Liege a preacher relate the life of the founder of the Redemptorists, Alphonse-Marie de Ligouri (1696-1787), who had left everything in order to consecrate himself to the conversion of countryside people. Seeing in Catholicism the possibility of realizing his socialist utopia of earthly paradise, Pecherine “crossed the Rubicon”, converted in 1840, entered the Redemptorist order in 1841, and was ordained a priest the same year. He became a renowned preacher in England (1845-1854), where A. Herzen came to see him. Deprived of his nationality in 1847 because of his conversion to Catholicism, he went to Ireland. But in 1861, after a stay in Rome where he was troubled by intrigues and ambitions, he left his order which he found insufficiently removed from the world. He served until his death as chaplain in a Dublin hospital, apparently not believing in anything any longer.
После учёбы и преподавания в Университете Санкт-Петербурга, Владимир Печерин (1807-1885) покидает Россию как «прокаженный город» в 1936 году. С трудом справляясь с нуждой, он очень быстро разочаровывается во Франции и, испробовав все возможные философские течения, случайно присутствует на службе проповедника, описывающего жизнь основателя католической Конгрегации Редемптористов Альфонса-Мари де Лигуори (1696-1787), который пожертвовал всем для евагелизации крестьян. Видя в католицизме возможность реализовать свою социалистическую утопию о земном рае, Печерин делает решительный шаг - принимаeт католичество в 1840 году, вступает в монашеский орден Конгрегации и становится его священником в 1841. Лишившись русского гражданста из-за католической веры, он становится известным проповедником в Англии (1845-1854), где к нему приезжает Герцем, и затем в Ирландии. Но в 1861 году, смущенный интригами и духом соперничества в Ватикане, он выходит из ордена, считая его недостаточно обособленным от суетного мира. Последующие годы плоть до смерти в 1885 году, Печерин служит капелланом при одной из главных больниц Дублина, явно потеряв веру во что-либо, но верно выполняя свой долг утешая страждущих и причащая умирающих.
