Allowed to go on tour in New York, only six years after the Revolution, the Moscow Art Theater went to a capitalist country with an ambiguous mission: on the one hand, to make money and to seduce the American audience by an accomplished art that had already conquered the Europeans since 1906. At the same time it had to overcome prejudice against a class enemy and the fear of urban modernity, and, on the other hand, to win the distrust for the tastes of Americans, accustomed to a commercial art and pure entertainment. We will show that the positions and reactions of K. Stanislavski, travelling two seasons on the East Coast with the Moscow Art Theater, differ radically from the behavior of the other director, V. Nemirovich-Danchenko, who succeeded him with his musical Studio. The latter did not only abandon his actors who returned without him to Moscow, but also would tempt to leave the status of the traveller and emigrate, contracting a job for the Hollywood studios. We will show that whether Stanislavski quickly loses his reservations about the artists and the audience of the “new world” and even if the performances of the Moscow Art Theatre will have deeply and for a long time impregnated American audiences, misunderstandings and cultural gaps however accumulate for Nemirovich-Danchenko. These episodes of Moscow Art Theatre’s life remained little studied by Soviet historians.
