The paper explores the complex interrelationship between experience, discourse and visuality in the works of Dmitry Prigov, Irina Nakhova, Arkady Dragomoshenko and Boris Mikhailov. All of them display a distinctly conceptual approach to the interaction between visual and verbal forms of expression. In this paper experience will be presented in terms of emotional patterns shared by a historically transient collective. If Dmitry Prigov gives expression to the range of voices surrounding him on all sides by translating them into poetic and visual images alike, Irina Nakhova is interested in spatial rendering of her experiences. Nakhova's usage of spatial language in her installations (inseparable both from the space of private living and from the social context)and her exploration of conflicting pictorial spaces in her paintings make her works highly original. While Russian poet Arkady Dragomoshchenko is interested in the capacity of language to “see” or portray things, Ukranian photographer Boris Mikhailov subtly balances between the signs of a recognizable past and those mnemonic images that are never reduced to the visible. Poetry teaches us to see visibility in the making, and photography combines the visual image with that which makes it come into being, i.e. social experience as it is lived and felt.
