p. 117-140

The paper elucidates some episodes from the life of Gustave-Euphranor Marin-Darbel (1802-1878), who was born in France and lived thirty years in Russia (1824-1854). He became renown first of all as home teacher of Prince Ivan Gagarin (1814-1854). Later Prince Gagarin became a Russian diplomat in Paris. He converted to Catholicism, entered the Society of Jesus and finally wrote a lot of important compositions on the connections between Russia and the West. The paper is based upon unpublished documents located in the archive of the Third Department of the Emperor’s Chancellery (GARF) and in the archive of the French Jesuits in Vanves. The paper shows Marin-Darbel as a victim of suspicions from the Russian Secret Police, as an author of the project for the reform of education in Russia (the project was presented to the Emperor Nicolas I), as a plague doctor during the cholera epidemic in Russia, and as a lifelong correspondent of his pupil Prince Ivan Gagarin.
