Il restitue ainsi par fragments l’histoire mouvementée d’un peuple de l’Arctique sibérien confronté tour à tour à la conquête et à l’administration russes, à la soviétisation et à la Guerre froide, au désengagement de l’État et à l’assimilation. Au détour de la parole rapportée de ses interlocuteurs autochtones, il s’agira de découvrir le regard que portent les Tchouktches sur leur propre société, mais également un peu de ce qui se perd et de ce qui se maintient aujourd’hui. For almost a decade, from 1993 to 2002, the author lived in Chukotka and carefully recorded his observations and thoughts regarding one of the local communities of these northern Asian frontiers: the Lygoravetlan (Chukchi), traditional reindeer herders or mammal hunters. In this way, he recounts in fragments the turbulent history of a Siberian Arctic people confronted in turn with the Russian conquest and administration, Sovietization and the Cold War, State disengagement and assimilation. Through the words of his native interlocutors, one discovers how the Chukchi see their own society, as well as a little of what is being lost or maintained today. В течение почти десяти лет, с 1993 по 2002 гг., автор жил на Чукотке и тщательно фиксировал свои наблюдения и размышления об одной из местных общин на этих границах Северной Азии –– лыгораветланах (чукчах), традиционными промыслами которых являются пастушество, оленеводство или охота. Автор по кусочкам восстанавливает насыщенную событиями историю народов Сибирской Арктики, сталкивавшихся поочерёдно с российским завоеванием и правлением, с советизацией и холодной войной, с уклонением государства от своих обязательств и «ассимиляцией».
