How did the three Romanian Lands – each with its own history – create present-day Romania acting as a nation state? This article will focus on the rise of nationalist feelings over the various historical events: the end of the Phanariote epoch and the treaty of Andrinople, the elaboration of a common project for Wallachia and Moldova, the impression of freedom in 1848 which expressed the fascination for the Western model. This article will then highlight the differences between the two Principalities of the Old Kingdom – Wallachia and Moldova – and the collective consciousness of the inhabitants of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in Banat and Transylvania.
