The purpose of this work is to review the history of the Stundist Movement in its interaction with the official Church. Stundism (the origin of the term is evidently German: Stunde meaning the hour dedicated to prayer and reading of the Scriptures) is an evangelical movement that rose in the 19th century in southern Russia, what is now known as the Ukraine, as a result of the spreading of German Protestantism (introduced by the colonists who emigrated to the Russian Empire already at the end of the 1700s), as well as the historical, economical, social and religious circumstances, which included the emancipation of the Serfs (that took place in 1861) and the translation of the Scriptures into Russian. The narrated story, which is still little known, is set against a backdrop in the southern territories of the Russian Empire in the second part of the 19th century and compares the Orthodox Christians, representatives of the official Russian Church, to the so-called Stundists. From the official viewpoint it is the Stundist to incarnate, in spite, the role of the other and, in a broad sense, the Orthodox to determine the rules of conflict rather than those of an encounter with a different religious horizon. Although it was initially tolerated (by the Orthodox population as well as the ecclesiastic authorities), considering that their conduct did not seem to undermine the Orthodox dogmas, within a few decades the Stundists ended up being accused of constituting a real threat both to the Church as well as the State to the point that in 1894 a law against Stundists was issued.
