Dmitri Kontchalovski (1878-1952) arrived in Paris in 1947 as a refugee of the second wave of Russian emigration. He lived in Russia under the Bolsheviks and suffered the fate of those who refused any sort of compromise. As he experienced war, revolution, great poverty under the Bolsheviks, and the DP camps after the war, his philosophy of life underwent great changes. Westerner at first and partisan of a state of law and democratic values, the war taught him patriotism and showed him the incompetence of a Provisional Government directed by University people and politicians without intelligence, his former friends. The outcome of Second World War and the indifference of the Allies towards the suffering of the people made him hope for the coming of an internationalism which would allow the two sick nations of Europe, Germany and Russia, to find a new sense to a life of solidarity among nations.
