At the end of the 1970s, the Soviet film-maker Andrei Konchalovsky moved over to Hollywood. In his memories, this major change in his life is narrated so vaguely, with so many inaccuracies and even lies, that it remains one of the most mysterious pages of the author’s biography. It arouses therefore two types of questions. First of all, why what was forbidden to the majority of the Soviet citizens should be tolerated for one of them? How far went the elites’ privileges? What’s more, was it in this special case a privilege or an exchange of services? In other words, can we imagine that the Soviet authorities considered to benefit from Andrei Konchalovsky’s “defection” to the West? These questions imply to envisage a hypothesis, often whispered, but unconfirmed by formal proofs: that of the possible links of the film-maker with the KGB.
