The abundance and variety of theoretical studies on secularisation, written both by Western and Russian authors, is well known. Secularisation means complicated historical and cultural phenomena, at the root of which there are problems of faith and the lack of it, the opposition of the divine, eternal and the secular, transient. In Muscovy the divine and the eternal were inseparable from the notions of the earthly power and the holy mission of the state. The 18th century was the age of “secularization” and due to the Europeanization of Russia, independent secular culture emerged, independent from clerical ideology.
As at the beginning of the 19th century, dreams about a European sovereign who would rule with “Divine love” and “Divine power” appeared, European thinkers looked towards Russia. This paper contains an analysis of theories of such authors as Franz von Baader, Johann Heinrich Jung-Stilling, Alexandre Sturdza or Julia von Krüdener, who wanted to see Tsar Alexander I on the throne as a ruler of a united Christian Europe. A separate section of the paper has been devoted to Joseph de Maistre, who did not share these views and categorically denied the Russian Tsar and his state an exceptional role in uniting the Christian nations of Europe and ruling them.
