p. 93-112

Marius Petipa joined the ballet of the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux in the spring of 1843, and remained with the troupe until the spring of 1844, under the stickling authority of Alexis Blache. This paper explores how Petipa, as a twenty-five year old, experienced his time in Bordeaux, as part of a troupe dominated by the personalities and talent of two couples of dancers, the Albert-Bellons and the Lucien Clairs. Close inspection of the Grand Théâtre archives and local press reports from the period shed light not only on Petipa’s time in Bordeaux, but also the context in which he lived and worked. The theatre was a leading centre for choreography at this time and consciously strove to resist the decadence of many provincial ballets, presenting a repertory of both amply performed pieces and more recent works. Material and financial constraints made a career in ballet difficult; the public’s expectations and demands were also a cause for constant concern and aesthetic opinions and cultural behavioural patterns transpire clearly through press reports and the diaries of those concerned.
