Le mythe de Rome chez Vladimir Soloviev

  • The myth of Rome by Vladimir Solovyev

Vladimir Solovyev never has never been in Rome, but the Eternal City, or rather its myth, plays a key role in his works and thought, which cannot be understood outside the myth of Rome. To give the reader some idea about the question, the author recalls of course the prophesies in the Book of Daniel, but as they are read by Solovyev himself, that is, in the light of Dante’s Divine Comedy and De Monarchia, and of Virgil’s Eneid. Thus is opened an imposing perspective on the Pope’s and the Emperor’s respective places (Solovyev not excluding that the latter might eventually be the tsar) and, more soberly, on the conditions of what a good government can be.
