p. 211-232

Anna Bunina is often considered as the first renowned poetess in Russia. She wanted to dedicate herself completely to poetry, without the social and financial ease which marriage offered. At the age of 28, she decided to spend all her fortune to fill the gaps of her education. She showed a remarkable will to become a quite professional poet, not hesitating to deal with subjects usually reserved for men. She underwent a certain misogyny and she was cruelly attacked by the members of Arzamas, because she was associated with the ancien style of her protector and friend Alexander Shishkov. This is what explains that she is little known.
All her writing and life show that she considered women as equal as men. She believed that her skill, her dignity, and her area of interest gave her the rights to express herself with the same liberty as that of a man. Thus she contributed to assert the place of women in the intellectual and cultural life in Russia, and she was a precursor of the movement of women, which will develop in the second half of the 19th century.
