Esther Lichtmann (1892-1990) a été une des plus proches collaboratrices de Nicolas et Elena Roerich. Elle fut un des membres du cercle ésotérique (dit « le Cercle ») fondé par ces derniers à New York. Après l’installation des Roerich à Naggar dans la vallée de Kullu (nord-ouest de l’Inde), Esther Lichtmann séjourna dans leur « ashram himalayen » à deux reprises, d’abord entre 1929 et 1931, ensuite en 1934. Son journal, qui se compose de neuf gros cahiers, contient des souvenirs particulièrement intéressants sur la vie avec Elena, notamment lorsque Nicolas et leur fils aîné Youri (Georges) séjournaient aux États-Unis et en Europe entre la fin mai 1929 et novembre 1930. Les conversations quotidiennes avec Elena – paraphrase de tout ce que la « mère de l’Agni Yoga » lui racontait et la description de ce dont elle avait été témoin – constituent l’essentiel du journal d’Esther Lichtmann durant cette période. Ce journal est donc une source d’information des plus précieuses sur la vie et les activités des Roerich au cours de leur période indienne, et ce avant la dissolution du Cercle survenu en 1935. En annexe, le lecteur trouvera des extraits du journal centrés plus particulièrement sur les souvenirs d’Elena et sur le mal qui l’affligeait.
Esther Lichtmann (1892-1990) was one of the close associates of Nikolai and Elena Roerich, a member of the esoteric Roerich circle in New York (the Circle or Krug in Russian). After the Roerich couple had settled in the Kulu Valley in India, she visited them twice, in 1929-1931 and in 1934. Living in the Roerichs’ “Himalayan Ashram” in Naggar, Esther kept a diary which contains most interesting records of Elena Roerich’s every-day life (while Nikolai and her elder son George/Yurii stayed in the usa and then in Europe, in 1929-1930). The main focus of these records is Esther’s daily conversations with Elena Ivanovna, being the paraphrase of everything she heard from the “Mother of the Agni Yoga” and the description of the things she personally witnessed. Esther Lichtmann’s diaries which make nine thick copybooks is a most valuable source of information about the life and activities of the Roerichs in their early Indian period, preceding the collapse of the Roerich Circle. In the Appendix to the article the reader will find excerpts from Lichtmann’s records focusing specifically on two topics – Elena’s recollections of her past and the description of her ailments.
Эстер Лихтман (1892-1990) была одной из ближайших сотрудниц Рерихов, членом эзотерического рериховского кружка (the Circle) в Нью-Йорке. После того как чета Рерихов обосновалась в долине Кулу в Индии, она дважды навещала их в 1929-1931 и в 1934 гг. Живя в доме Рерихов в Наггаре, она вела дневник, который содержит интереснейшие записи о повседневной жизни Елены Рерих (в отсутствии Н. Рериха, находившегося с конца 1929 – 1930 гг. со старшим сыном Юрием в США и затем Европе). Среди этих записей главное место занимают ежедневные беседы с Еленой Ивановной на самые разные темы, по сути, пересказ всего того, что Эстер слышала из уст «Матери Агни-Йоги». Дневники, которые она вела во время этих двух поездок – не опубликованные и практически не известные исследователям – это ценнейший источник сведений о жизни и деятельности Рерихов раннего индийского периода, предшествующего распаду нью-йоркского кружка. К статье прилагаются отрывки из дневников Э.Лихман по двум темам: воспоминания Е. Рерих и описание её болезней.
