The present article is about Nicholas Roerich’s contribution to the study of the culture of the Old Believers in the Uimon steppe located in the South-West of the present Altai Republic of the Russian Federation. It relies on the analysis of scientific books on this matter and on the author’s ethnological work on the field. Nicholas Roerich’s work is of particular value in as much as it refers to a period which can be considered as the « climax » of the development of the culture of the Old Believers in the Altaï. What Roerich has to say on the legend of the Kingdom of the White Waters (Belovod’e) is all the more valuable as no other researcher has ever succeeded in obtaining as much information. I believe that Nicholas Roerich’s stay during the summer of 1926 in the Verkh-Uimon village is indirectly the cause of the specific traits which the legend of the Kingdom of the White Waters took on during the 20th and 21st centuries. It is also the cause of the persistant existence of the Old Believers’ tradition in the Uimon valley.
