The year 1917 is a crucial moment in the biography of Mikhail Apelbaum (1894-1957), a famous interpreter of Yiddish songs. The artist had his hour of glory with the Jewish audience of the USSR. An actor of Jewish theater in pre-Revolutionary Russia, he began a career as a Yiddish soloist in the aftermath of the events of February 1917, when restrictions on the development of Jewish culture were abolished. During the Civil War he toured the cities of Ukraine and Belarus. He was the first to choose this form of itinerant career in the new historical circumstances of post-revolutionary Russia. It was during his concert activity in the first half of the 1920s that he developed his conception of Jewish folk song as a particular genre of Soviet music which reached maturity in the mid-1930s.
