The 1990s were marked by the break-up of Yugoslavia and the beginning of the digital revolution and saw the emergence of a first generation of private publishers, born on the ruins of the Socialist publishing system. In a reaction to the major political break characterized by the end of the Communist system, the war, the break-up of the Federal State, and the retreat into reinvented “national” cultures, these publishing professionals had the feeling they formed a generation.
Examining the interactions between these circumscribed initiatives and the wider publishing scene, as well as the transmission of practices in spite of the obvious temporal ruptures, sheds light on the cultural recompositions that occurred within the states succeeding to the former Yugoslavia (where tensions emerged, for example, between national cultures and the persistence of a Yugoslav cultural space). Therefore, this article draws on my current research – which will eventually encompass all the successor states – into selected trajectories in publishing since 1990, but also into the processes of transmission and legacy on a larger timescale. I thus analyse the latter through the continuities in editorial practices, particularly the practices of translation as a source of knowledge and modernisation, as a space of freedom against the politicisation of the cultural sphere.
