Visages de Russie. Boris Grigoriev et Ivan Bounine

  • Faces of Russia: Boris Grigoriev and Ivan Bunin

Boris Grigoriev—a Russian “World of Art” artist who gained a world-wide reputation as a painter through emigration—and Ivan Bunin—laureate of the Pushkin prize in Russia and a Nobel-prize winner in Europe—, though they were not in direct contact with each other, were engaged in a cultural dialogue in a language they both knew well: that of the revival of “Primitivism” in the culture of the Russian Silver Age. Grigoriev, inspired by the art of the Orthodox icon and Flemish Primitives, constructed his pictures on the principle of the “reverse perspective” elaborated by Pavel Florensky. Bunin transposed some of the techniques of primitive painters into his elliptic writing, which was inspired by the lubok, proverbs, and folk songs. The characters depicted by both artists encapsulate an “Essence of Being.” The artists thus analyze a relatively recent, tragic past and broaden their reflection, from the Faces of Russia to the Faces of the world, in accordance both with the titles of Grigoriev’s monumental panels and the logic of Bunin’s work.
