In the context of a general interest in Proust among the Russian emigration which became evident during the encounters of the French-Russian studio and from the first translations of In Search of Lost Time by Boris Schloezer and Galina Kuznetsova, the approach of Dmitry Merezhkovsky was very specific. In a few citations from his monumental Mystery of the West: Atlantis-Europe (English edition title: Atlantis/Europe: The Secret of the West), in the chapter “Europe-Sodom”, he cursed Europe as a place where abided all the sins of humanity, as well as Proust himself: “the writer also dwells in Sodom, and even if he has been ‘exempt from the fire from above’, it was only partly, he was severely burnt, half-dead”. Still, despite this severe diagnosis and the condemning tone of a prophet, it is thanks to Proust that both Merezhkovsky and Gippius found the means to reconcile these oppositions, to approach ‘the mystery of the third sex’ which they tried to resolve in terms of a “tripartite union” with Dmitry Filosofov; finally to indicate to the perishing world both in the West and in the East that its resurrection was still possible.
