Présenter en quelques mots Nicolas Roerich à qui ne saurait rien de lui relève de la gageure. Le chercheur qui s’intéresse à ce peintre, décorateur, enseignant, poète, écrivain, archéologue, voyageur, mystique, théosophe qui fonda avec sa femme Elena un Nouveau Mouvement Religieux, l’Agni Yoga, est d’emblée confronté à la somme importante des compétences nécessaires pour aborder des domaines aussi divers que l’art, l’archéologie, l’histoire, l’ésotérisme, les études religieuses, voire même la psychopathologie… Par ailleurs, il doit aussi prendre en compte le fait que la personnalité de Roerich et son œuvre ont fait l’objet d’appréciations divergentes. Ces considérations ont déterminé le choix d’ouvrir le présent recueil par une longue introduction qui rappelle les différentes facettes de cette personnalité hors norme et qui démontre combien « le cas Roerich » constitue un remarquable fil rouge pour penser les rapports entre art, politique et ésotérisme et traiter la question de l’imaginaire de l’Orient en Russie.
To introduce Nicholas Roerich to whoever knows hardly anything about him is a real challenge. Any researcher interested in this painter, decorator, teacher, poet, writer, archaeologist, traveler, mystic, theosophist who founded with his wife Elena a New Religious Movement, the Agni Yoga, needs a huge amount of skills to deal with such different fields as arts, archeology, history, esotericism, religious studies, and even psychopathology… The fact that Roerich’s personality and work have been the subject of divergent assessments adds to the difficulty. Hence our choice to open this collection of papers with a long introductory text which dwells anew on the different aspects of his bigger-than-life personality, his unique life and his spiritual heritage. In doing so, we hope to have demonstrated how the so-called «Roerich’s case» is an excellent red thread to map out the relationship between art, politics and esotericism as well as the image Russia has of the East.
Очень сложно дать в нескольких словах представление о личности Николая Рериха тому, кто никогда о нём не слышал. Исследователь, интересующийся этим художником, декоратором, учителем, поэтом, писателем, археологом, путешественником, мистиком, богословом, основавшим со своей женой Еленой новое религиозное учение Агни Йога, сразу сталкивается с проблемой обладания определённой суммой знаний в самых разных областях: в искусстве, археологии, истории, эзотеризме, вероучениях и даже в психопатологии... Кроме того, исследователь должен учитывать тот факт, что личность Рериха и его творчество вызывали самые различные оценки. Все эти причины привели к тому, что настоящий сборник открывается длинным вступлением, показывающим различные аспекты этой незаурядной личности и дающим понять, насколько «случай Рериха» может служить путеводной нитью для размышлений о взаимосвязи искусства, политики, эзотеризма, а также для осмысления вопроса о представлениях о Востоке в России.
